Purity, Ibadah and Worship
by Ustadha Nazia Jamil
2.00pm March 27th 2011

Review of Meeting
“Purity is half of faith” excerpt from sahih Muslim reporting on what the Prophet Muhammad saw, said when speaking of this issue. Taharah is integral part of the religion, which is to maintain cleanliness by washing to rid of impurities such as urine, stool or blood.
Purity can be outlined in three topics like, physical Purity, where it involves having clean clothes, body and place of worship for your prayer to be valid. Ritual Purity, which involves performing wudu (ablution) and ghusl (purificatory bath). Tayyammum (dry ablution) where water cannot be used. Spiritual purity, concerning the heart and soul, and what cleans the heart from spiritual diseases. Worship is then accepted when these criterias are met.
The merits of wudu are that on a narration reported by Abu Huraira (companion of Prophet) that “On the day of Resurrection, people will be recognised by wudu performed correctly according to sunnah (prophets way) where there will be shining light from parts of body washed”.
The issues regarding the Salah (prayer) and Purity are very important and if Muslims do not know them then, it is detrimental for our reckoning and therefore should be given priority before going into detail into other areas of Islam that are secondary to these essentials.
Menstruation is a very big issue as it deals with issues of prayer, fast, various types of worship and conjugal relations. It is destined to all daughters of Adam (first Prophet) During menstruation you are not allowed to perform your obligatory prayers, you are still following Allah’s command by not worshipping which is like worshipping itself. Other forms of worship are allowed during this period like general dhikr, salawat, and even helping in the community by being at someone’s aid, which gives us an opportunity to draw close to Allah swa
Inner Purity is vital for our connection with Allah swa. He has created man and Jinn for no other purpose other than His worship. The prophet has asked his companions if there was a river outside his home with which he bathed 5 times a day would there be any dirt left on him, the companions replied with no. Then the Prophet had said that this is the way in which the 5 daily prayers removes sins. What worth is the prayer if the inside of the heart is impure and with wrong intentions?
In your prayer you have to free yourself from hypocrisy, greed, anger and jealousy and more. Imam Gazalli had written on the diseases of the heart and had summarised 3 bad qualities of the heart. Envy can be close to miserliness where whatever is given to a person is from Allah swa and through having this feeling we can never be content. Showing off, ostentation is a hidden form of Shirk. Arrogance and Pride, was the downfall of the shaitan (devil refusing to bow to created form of Adam) whom was known for his immense worship of Allah swa. Muslims are taught to have good opinions of other people and we should never judge a person by his appearance or other. A black dot appears on the heart once a person commits a sin and then causes it to rust on the heart if not repented. It is not easy to clean it off but with plenty of repentance and other worship it can be cleaned. Islam has the belief that if the heart is sound then the rest of the body is sound.
